The Florida Department of Transportation awarded this $75 million project to alleviate up to 40 percent of traffic on I-4 through the Disney corridor. Kiewit Southern Co., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, constructed the toll State Road – 429 Western Beltway as well as the associated ramps and state-of-the-art signature walls near the gantry. Today, the 15-mile-long SR-429 provides a beltway around Orlando on the west side, and is a new multilane toll link between the mainline turnpike and I-4.
The scope of work involved constructing a limited-access, north-south multilane toll road from I-4 to US-192 north. The project included six miles of roadway, embankment, two steel tub-girder flyover bridges, five precast concrete beam bridges, intersections, drainage, signing, pavement markings, signals and roadway lighting.
Major quantities included excavating 250,000 cubic yards of subsoil excavation; 2.5 million cubic yards of excavation and embankment; 37,000 linear feet of storm drainage, ranging from 18 to 66 inches; 370,000 square yards of roadway base and paving; 9,000 linear feet of sanitary sewer and water services at toll plaza locations; 290 storm drain inlets and manholes; a million square yards of top soil and sodding; 18-and 24-inch square concrete piling; and 9,000 cubic yards of structural concrete.
